2013 Total Grabs & Not So Fab: Foundations & Concealers

The year is almost over, can you believe it? It has gone by extremely fast in my opinion.

Alright, so I'll finally get to the topic of this blog. As a makeup artist, I always have to try different products especially when I have clients that ask about different items they can by from drugstores to high end products. I took the time out this year to look at products YouTube Guru's raved about and some products that I never even heard of. I must admit, I did enjoy a lot of my drugstore products more than the high end products. All great products aren't expensive! Woohoo! Let's get to it.

NOT SO FAB: MAC Studio Fix Fluid Foundation (6/10 Rating) ($27.00)
Don't kill me for this, because I know some people absolutely love this foundation, and it is some people's holy grail. Truth be told, it wasn't all that great to me. I felt like everyone has raved about this product, but I wasn't satisfied with it. I tried wearing it for a week and it has never given me a flawless face. I'm not into foundation that looks cakey or feels heavy on my face. This product does give full coverage, it's long lasting, variety of shades, and great pigmentation. The cons for me is that it is too pricey, it causes breakouts, and very heavy. Definitely not a foundation for the summer time, but that's just my opinion.

TOTAL GRAB: Revlon ColorStay Foundation (9/10 Rating) ($10.00)
This is quite similar to the Mac Studio Fix Fluid but better and this is also a products some people raved about. I have oily/combination skin and this has been one of my favorites to wear especially during the summer time when I'm extremely oily in my t-zone. This foundation has full coverage, not very heavy feeling on the face, variety of shades, great pigmentation, and affordable. I love how it is just the right amount of coverage. The cons on this foundation is that it dries really fast, so you have to blend while applying.

NOT SO FAB: Pur Minerals Disappearing Act Concealer (5/10) ($22.00)
A random product and not one that I was pleased with. I don't feel like this product hides blemishes but while this lacks in coverage, it can be used as a highlighter. Medium weight, very creamy, and easy to apply. The cons are not many shades, they have unnatural tones, not enough coverage, and too pricey for what it's worth.

TOTAL GRAB: MAC Pro Long Wear Concealer (9.5/10) ($18.00)
Must agree that this product is long lasting, provides enough coverage, very easy to apply, and blends in very well. My holy grail from 2013! A concealer that doesn't crease on me! Mac did a great thing with this product, they have many shades for every complexion, and this also a great highlighter. The only con to this is that some tones can be too pink or too yellow.

NOT SO FAB: Revlon PhotoReady Foundation (6/10) ($12.00)
I was so disappointed after trying this product out. Literally, I am in love with their PhotoReady Primer, but this foundation was terrible. For one this foundation is too shiny with shimmer. If I am going to do a photoshoot, I wouldn't suggest this product at all. This foundation does provide many shades, full coverage with good pigmentation, and inexpensive. The cons... well it is too shimmery, not for a day to day wear, and not long lasting at all.

TOTAL GRAB: Makeup Forever HD Foundation (10/10) ($42.00)
Although this is a really expensive foundation, it goes on the face flawlessly. I cannot think of any cons to this product other than it being expensive. Behind the camera and on a day to day wear, this foundation looks incredible. MUFE provided many shades and in between shades for all skin types. I barely need any oil sheets to clean my t-zone during the day, it's very refreshing on the face, because it hardly feels like you have anything on. My friend, to me, this is perfect. #MYHOLYGRAIL

NOT SO FAB: NYX Concealer Jar ($5.00)
These aren't really concealers in my opinion, I think these are more so color correctors. You get what you pay for with this product. They did not work to well for me because they seem to be rich in color, but faded when applied to the skin. The pigmentation is completely off. Pros is that it is easy to blend and affordable. Cons unsatisfying pigmentation and lack of shades to call these concealers.

These are my total grabs and not so fabs for Foundations and Concealers. Below I'll list a few total grabs and not so fab below if you're interested. Please let me know what your total grab and not so fabs are from 2013!

Total Grabs
NYX HD Foundation ($15.00)
L'Oreal True Match Lumi Healthy Foundation ($12.99)
Pur Mineral 4 in 1 Pressed  Mineral Foundation (27.00)
MAC Face & Body Foundation ($27.00)
Bare Minerals Matte Foundation ($27.00)

Not So Fab
Smashbox Liquid Halo Foundation ($42.00)
Maybelline Dream Mousse Foundation ($10.00)
Tarte Amazonian Clay Foundation ($38.00)
IT Cosmetics Powder Foundation ($35.00)
NYX Matte But Not Flat Foundation ($8.00)

Makeup Tip Do's & Don't #2

We've all made errors doing our own makeup and sometimes what we learn could be the incorrect way of doing it. I'm going to share a few tips that I know, that may help you, or someone else that you know. Please share any tips or suggestions you may have. If you completely disagree with any of my tips or have any questions, I'd love to know. I'll also share what products I would recommend with each tip.

Tip #1 - Don't apply liquid eyeliner to your water line.

  • Liquid eyeliner could get into your eye, make your eyes blurry for about a few minutes. If you wear contacts, this will dirty your contact lens.
  • It will smudge, smear, or become runny before drying.
  • Your water line is wet, therefore, it will most likely not stay in place, or come off during the day.
  • Recommendation: Gel Eyeliner or Kohl Pencils (E.g Urban Decay Pencil Eyeliner)
Tip #2 - Do wash your face & moisturize before applying makeup.

  • Applying makeup on a dirty face will just cause clogged pores and acne.
  • Moisturizing the face practically provides a base between your face and the makeup.
  • Moisturizing will also help keep your makeup in place.
  • Recommendation: Cetaphil Moisturizer, Clean & Clear Face Moisturizer, MAC Gel Moisturizer.

Tip #3 - Don't set your makeup with a powder foundation on top of a liquid foundation.
  • Powder foundation alone can give you good coverage.
  • If you use two foundations such as liquid than powder, the makeup will become cakey.
  • Add a setting powder on top of the liquid foundation to set it.
  • Recommendation: Ben Nye Banana Powder, Cover Girl Translucent Powder, Ben Nye Super White Translucent Powder

Tip #4 - Do moisturize your lips before applying lip products.
  • Moisturizing the lips can prevent your lips from cracking or feeling dry
  • Some lip products can be very drying such as lip liners or lipsticks, therefore, if you have a base in between you can prevent flaking and dry lips during the day.
  • Recommendation: Baby Lips Dr. Rescue, Burt's Bees Lip Balm, Chapstick
These are just some tips that I've learned along the way. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to let me know below. :) Happy Holidays.

My Natural Makeup Routine: Products I'm Using

Due to the holidays, weather changes, getting prepared for LA, working, and taking care of home I had to shorten my morning makeup routine. This look takes me only about 25 minutes to do. I'll list the products below if you're interested in just using less makeup or finding a new natural look.

Products I'm currently using:

Short and pretty simple.

Ideas For Holiday Makeup!

During the holiday, we all like to get dressed up and dolled up when we're visiting family, friends, or attending Christmas parties. It can be really hard to find makeup for the season or for an occasion. Here I will list different makeup products that I'm sure you will love for the season.

If your not really into makeup and just like to throw on lip gloss or lip stick, you will absolutely love U.G.L.Y Girl cosmetics lip gloss started by celebrity makeup artist DAndre Michael. I recently purchased this in November at a makeup tradeshow and immediately I fell in love after putting it on. There were 10 shades to choose from and they all seem to be the perfect shade, my absolute favorite is "Pout" because it's the perfect nude without going overboard. On top of this lovely lip gloss, it has the perfect shine, doesn't dry out your lips, nor do you have to keep reapplying. I have to say it is worth every dollar spent.

Who likes to wear eye makeup? I do.
Ok, ok. So I'm really enjoying this Mineral Eye Shadow Palette from Motives Cosmetics for La La. This palette has 5 different shades and all natural medium to dark tones. You can create so many different looks just from this palette from day to night. I'm sure your wondering how pigmented these shadows are, right? Truth be told, they are beautifully pigmented, and looks wonderful on all skin tones. These colors do have a bit shimmer in them, just enough sparkle for the holidays.

THUMBTACK.COM

Actually,
I have to update this post. I strongly dislike Thumbtack. Granted a lot of customers do go on their looking for services. However, it is very irritating to pay Thumbtack $3.33 every time a customer wants to receive a quote on your services. I can get up to 20 request in that week and that means I paid $66.6 to Thumbtack. In which the customer can decide if they want to use you or not... just because as the artist you pay, that doesn't guarantee your job. It is a great way to rip off people who are photographers, makeup artist, stylist, etc.

The Truth About Expensive & Inexpensive Makeup

I love makeup. I love cheap and expensive makeup.

Truth is, it isn't necessary to always spend a ton of money on certain products or brands.
(E.g Products made by certain brands are expensive because they make higher end quality products. However, expecting a brand to make every single product just as fabulous as another is a gullible idea.)

Truth is, sometimes you'll get what you pay for.
(E.g Buying a $1.00 eye-liner and expecting it not to smudge or to stay on all day is being dramatic. Isn't it worth to spend a few more dollars to find something that will be beneficial to your liking?)

Truth is, sometimes you'll pay a load of money for the "Brand" name.
(E.g Buying a foundation that is $50.00 may work excellent or not at all. It may not be right for you after a period of time but your skin combination may change, it may break you out, or it doesn't do what the product says its going to do. Was it worth spending all that money?)

There are plenty of inexpensive makeup products that work just as great or even better than some expensive products.

Eve Pearl
Mac
Maybelline
Bobbi Brown
NYX
Ulta
Sigma
BH Cosmetics
Revlon
Wet N Wild
Covergirl
Elf
Pur Minerals
Lorac
Bare Minerals
Neutrogena
L'Oreal

I just listed "Brands" that are expensive and inexpensive (Drugstore & Higher End). Each of them are known for something. However, each brand make great products. It's all about finding & investing the time in researching products and finding out what works best for you.

Revlon Series: Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain

Can the Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain  be the alternative to wearing lipstick and lipgloss? To kiss without sharing your colored lips? Could this be true and does it work for you?

I'll share my experience so you can decide for yourself.

Placing it onto my lips, it was very smooth, strong peppermint candy smell, color was true after two layers of application, and definitely feels like a lip balm.

[Give it a couple of hours to have the non-transferable effect. You can kiss your love ones cheek without leaving a stain behind!]

After a few hours the balm feeling fades away, the color wear off just a little bit. Reapplying the application one more time made the color last all day.

I prefer lip stains over lipstick, especially, Revlon Balm Stain. I don't have to worry about touching up my lips. Plus, I like that my lips feel like I'm not wearing anything.

So truth is.. the lip balm feeling doesn't last all day, the color will last but if you want your color in depth you will need to apply once more, and the smell may or may not bother you. (It only smells when applying)

This product will recieve 4 out of 5 stars for me. I have to agree that this is the alternate to wearing lipstick.

[I bought these at Walgreens for $7.99 and I got the second one half off.]

Quick Message About My Hiatus

Hello Everyone,
I have taken a hiatus from blogging due to my birthday, birthday trip to the mountain, photo shoots, video shoots, and movies I've been working. Everything I will still be working on but I have set some time aside to continue to blog. I have recently bought some new products I am ready to talk about soon. I will be positing behind the scene photos from photo shoots. I am also going to write about my recent trip to the mountains and post photos of that as well. Ciao!

Getting A Makeup Artist Facebook Page?

Yes, it is official that I got a facebook page. Generally, I was slightly against it considering that I have a personal one. Turns out that I'm not a huge fan of inviting everyone into my personal world. The biggest way I can communicate with my audience about my experiences, blog, and much more is by creating a Facebook page.

Check it out

Life As A Makeup Artist

I have to admit that I enjoy doing makeup. It is my passion. When I'm working with a client or on set I go into a place unknown where creativity, ambition, and thrive only exist. All my worries, distractions, and life itself is far from my mind. It is an incredible feeling to make other feel beautiful. I love working with other people and being very creative. I am posting a video of me being on set with King Bishop Productions. We worked very well together. The models, hairstylist, and my assistant was just great. This was an amazing project.

Beauty Tip of The Day: False Eyelashes

Do you wear false eyelashes? I most certainly do.

Want to know how you can make them last ALL day?

Ok, here's the trick... READY?

Once you apply the glue to the eyelashes, let it sit to get tacky (sticky).

Don't apply them to your lashes just yet.

Add a second layer of glue onto the glue you already applied, allow it to get tacky again.
Make sure that you apply the glue thicker on the ends

Then apply them onto your eyes

The double layer glue will allow your false eyelashes to last longer.

PS: False eyelashes don't make you break out. It's the glue. If you have sensitive skin try using a hypoallergenic eyelash glue or glue with vitamins.

MAC: Beauty Line Between Love & Hate

Yes! I love & hate MAC... (Believe it or not)
Just because a product cost more and it's more expensive -- doesn't mean it works. I'll share the products I love and hate from MAC. Plus, I'll explain my experiences and my opinions.

Many beauty guru's and makeup artist make the mistake of buying higher end products and thinking it would be fabulous... Don't believe the HYPE!

Oh how I love...

MAC Studio Moisture Cream
Officially, my face does not have to suffer during winter time. It is so hydrating and never leaves the skin feeling oily or dry. Oh my goodness! The feeling I get when putting this on.... indescribable. I was so sad when I ran out! Great product for combination skin.

MAC Powerpoint Eye Pencil - Engraved

I was afraid of buying this eye pencil because lets just say I was so addicted to Maybelline's Define-A-Line Eyeliner. However, just like many liners it smudges and runs. So, I was convinced to buy MAC's Engraved... Immediately, I fell in love. It is perfect for my waterline!

MAC Lip Prep & Prime
Do you get chapped lips? Do your lips feather when you wear lipstick? Well, guess what? My lips do too! I was introduced to this product by a friend and it saved my lips from looking rough after wearing matte lipsticks for awhile. Who was the genius behind this? I Love It.

Oh how I absolutely HATE these products...

MAC - Lustre Drops

What a TERRIBLE bronzer! It smears, doesn't stay put, gets all over your clothing like there's no tomorrow! YUCK!

Studio Finish Concealer

I use to love this concealer, until I realized how CAKEY this product was on my face. It is absolutely too much. Perhaps this is just to cover spot blemishes? Not sure. I don't recommend.

MAC Feline Kohl Power Eye Pencil
OMG! This product was lovely when putting it on. Amazing kohl power... but it is so messy. I hate that I love this pencil to the point where I cannot wear it. After putting it on it gets all over the place on my eyelid and under my eye. I never had this problem with any eyeliner ever.

How To Apply Eye Makeup

*Read below the steps listed and you will find more information about materials needed, along with finding the different areas of your eye, and other things to remember*

Step 1: Apply the eye shadow base or primer all over the eye area (ECB) using your concealer brush or your finger.

Step 2: Use a flat eye shadow brush, an eye shadow color of your choice, and apply the eye shadow to your eyelid area.

Step 3: Use a small flat eye shadow brush, a highlighting eye shadow color, and apply it to your brow bone.

Step 4: Use a blending brush and apply the preferred eye shadow color into the crease. (Use the windshield wiping motion)

(Use a clean blending brush in a windshield wiping motion or sweeping upward motion. Blend away any harsh lines from the eye shadows)

Step 5: In small short strokes across the eyelid apply your eyeliner gently to control how thick, thin, long, or short you want the eyeliner

*Hold down your water line (below the eyeball) with your finger to apply your eyeliner or you can apply it outside of the water liner. (located with your bottom eyelashes)*

Step 6: Apply mascara to the eyelashes. Start from the tip of the eyelashes going in towards the eye. (outward to inward motion)

My Beauty Bag Must Haves?

Granted I usually do my makeup everyday and I don't like to carry a ton of products with me. My beauty bag is full of 5 products that will keep my makeup FRESH and LASTING all day long. How simple is that?

1. Baby Lips - Quenched Lip Balm

Oh my goodness! I think that I have the worst chapped lips that you can think of! However, one day I was just walking into Walmart, found this cute packaging of this lip balm, and it has worked wonders for me since then. Not only does it make my lip feel amazing, it has SPF 20! A product that will protect your lips from that harsh sun!

2. Oil Absorb Sheets

Oily T-ZONE? Hot summer day? Oil Absorbing Sheets are absolutely perfect! You can get rid of the oily face and not destroy your makeup! How perfect is that?

3. Eyeliner

I am HUGE fan of wearing Gel Eyeliner! However, I will not carry around a gel pot and an angled brush if it isn't needed. I will simply take the closest eyeliner pencil with me just in case my eyeliner wears off my waterline or wears off.

4. Q-TIPS
This is a NO BRAINER! Makeup will smudge, run, (eyeliner, mascara, etc) and it will crease (concealer)! So the brilliant thing about q-tips is that you can carry a few in a bag and these will fix your makeup that you need it to fix, rather than using harsh paper towel, or using your fingers and getting them dirty.

5. Eyelash Glue
Well most certainly Lash Grip! I'm a suspect of wearing eyelashes on the regular basis. Usually, they will come off in the corners after having a long day. I may cry here and there. However, having my glue in my bag will definitely allow me to fix my eyelashes in less than 3 minutes. Quick, small, easy, and portable!

Top 5 Makeup Don'ts

1. Don't wear foundation brighter than the skin tone.
Foundation should match your face and neck as much as possible to compliment the rest of the body skin tone.

2. Don't apply makeup without SKIN CARE
It is very important to take care of the skin, especially to prevent health problems. Never miss this step.

3. Don't wear concealer that is entirely too bright for the skin tone.
Concealer should be one or two shades brighter than the foundation. It is made to cover up those problem areas and dark circles, why create white circles?

4.  Don't overload on the makeup that isn't needed.
Unless your putting on a clown face for the carnival, it takes away from the beauty, and glow. Be careful of the cake face.

5. Don't CLUMP the mascara
Oh how this will become messy, sloppy, and runny. Using mascara is to show off the eyelashes not to stick them and have them clump together as if the eyes only have 4 big eyelashes.

Avoid these mistakes! Use makeup to be glamorous and flawless!

No Makeup Challenge

Hello Beauties!
I have recently did the no makeup challenge for a week. Considering that I didn't wear any makeup for a week, I dedicated my time to deep cleansing my brushes, and devoting my time to my skin regimen. I went 7 whole days without any makeup WHAT SO EVER.

I did notice that I was having a slight break out and I wasn't sure where it was coming from, so my skin definitely needed a break. Here I am going to list the products I have been using all week and will continue to use because it is working for my skin. If you decide that you would like to use this regimen please understand that your skin always gets worst before getting better. (This is with any regimen I believe, unless you know a miracle worker. ^_^)

Here are my steps that I use.

1. EXFOLIATING
I personally exfoliate before washing my face with a face cleansers.
Ambi Even & Clear Exfoliating Wash
(I only use this twice a week and when I don't use this, I typically skip step 1)

2. CLEANSER
Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser (For All Skin Types)This is personally my favorite cleanser because I do have combination skin so I don't really see it drying out my face or causing any irritation.

3. MOISTURIZE
Cetaphil Facial Moisturizer
OMG! How important is it to moisturize. I'm typically oily in my t-zone like most people and I don't really see this being effective for it. However, it is a great addition to my regimen with adding a small amount. Plus it has SPF, very important protection.

So far these 3 simple products are added to my regimen. My breakout is down to the minimum and I am back to wearing my makeup! If you are going to try this please let me know how it works for you. ^.^

How To Look Natural & Flawless Using Makeup

The aspect of flawless natural makeup is to look like your not wearing any at all. Here is an example of one that I have done to give you an idea. I also added in eye-liner with a soft pink lipgloss.

(Photo taken by King Bishop Productions)

First, moisturize and prime your face. This will help with hydrating the skin and covering up those pores. Next, add concealer to any scars, blemishes, dark circles, or acne you don't want to show through your makeup. Then, add on your foundation. I suggest using a foundation (liquid) with a stippling brush to give you an airbrush finish or a powder foundation using a powder brush. Last, you want to add a soft color blush, a little highlight to give you a glow.

There you have a beautiful flawless natural look!

Photoshoot w/ King Bishop Productions

Yesterday I did a photoshoot with King Bishop Productions. Bishop is an incredible photographer. Before going into the photoshoot we decided to do multiple looks from Natural to Bombshell, Pin Up to Barbie, and a ton of glamorous looks. We executed exactly what wanted to do. We had a great time on set doing exactly what we love doing.

Daily Face Routine

I just thought about trying out this new video software. Turns out that it wasn't really my cup of tea. However, I did show my daily face routine. Enjoy!

Makeup Trail: Chantelle Rhodes

Working with Model: Chantelle Rhodes

Makeup Trail: Amanda Ego

Today I went out early this morning to do a test beauty look on a model. Here is the outcome.

Photoready Primer

I have bought numerous primers just to see what works and what doesn't work. For my face I have tried all kinds of primers from NYX to Smashbox but the one that works the best is: Revlon Photoready Primer. This primer consist of the right consistency I'm always looking for and it goes on to my face smoothly. AMAZING! I can guarantee that if you add a bit of this to your daily makeup face routine, you will absolutely enjoy this! Not only will it help cover up those pores but it will allow your makeup to go on flawlessly.
